JSI conducted an assessment of the system of care in San Francisco for people experiencing homelessness who also have behavioral health needs. Through interviews with consumers and key informants, convenings with key agencies and experts in the field, a national scan of best practices, and a comprehensive data review, JSI developed the report: Behavioral Health and Homelessness in San Francisco: Needs and Opportunities with funding from Tipping Point Community and UCSF Department of Psychiatry.
In addition to research findings, the report also includes a set of recommendations to improve the existing care delivery system for these individuals. The Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, officially announced the release of JSI’s report at a press conference, endorsing the JSI report findings and recommendations. Based on the report recommendations, Tipping Point Community has allocated up to $3 million in funding to build another psychiatric respite center for people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco, and the Department of Public Health is exploring the development of a managed alcohol program.
