HRSA Health Center Workforce Survey

The healthcare workforce is particularly susceptible to overwork and burnout, and the stresses of public health crises exacerbates the problem. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC), in collaboration with John Snow, Inc. (JSI), are examining the issue. JSI will develop a workforce survey to assess levels of staff well-being, engagement, satisfaction, and burnout in HRSA-funded health centers across the country.

HRSA funds nearly 1,400 health centers operating almost 13,000 service delivery sites in every U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia. In 2019, there were more than 252,000 full-time health center providers and staff serving nearly 30 million people. The survey will be offered to health centers to administer to their employees.

Ultimately, the data collected through the survey will: 

1. provide baseline levels of job satisfaction and burnout
2. allow for comparisons at the national, state, and organizational levels 
3. identify areas of organizational change to improve workforce well-being 
4. inform HRSA/Bureau of Primary Health Care training/technical assistance strategies to improve workforce well-being and build learning organizations/communities.
