Improving Health Outcomes for More than 58 Million Ethiopians

Our USAID Transform: Primary Health Care Activity, the U.S. Government’s flagship health program in Ethiopia, came to a close this week after working for almost six years to improve the health status of more than 58 million Ethiopians. The Activity partnered with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) to strengthen the primary health care system and improve the quality of maternal and child health services in 451 districts.
USAID Transform: Primary Health Care helped prevent 1.4 million deaths in children under 5, more than 85,000 maternal deaths, and more than 8.8 million unintended pregnancies. The Activity strengthened the quality of health services in more than 11,000 health centers and posts across the country by improving the skills and knowledge of more than 111,000 health workers, strengthening service delivery, data management, supply of medicines and medical equipment, and introducing innovative health approaches to prevent child and maternal deaths.

JSI Ethiopia Country Representative and Deputy Chief of Party, Dr. Binyam Fekadu shared the impact and results of the Activity at a conference in Addis Ababa, which was attended by more than 100 representatives from government, civil society, and partner organizations.
USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Sean Jones congratulated the Activity for its high impact achievements and making the investment a successful one. “I am so proud of what has been achieved over the past five years despite the challenges encountered. The Activity has been a partner in these transformational achievements in health. Our focus has been to put women and children at the center of health interventions. Not only were lives transformed–we know that lives were saved,” he said.
JSI Associate Director Elaine Rossi thanked the partners, including representatives from the FMOH, USAID, and civil society organizations for their contributions to the Activity’s success. The conference included a gallery walk of posters showcasing the Activity’s work, a video presentation, and a panel discussion facilitated by USAID with panelists from the Ministry and Regional Health Bureaus.

The project was funded by USAID and implemented by a consortium of organizations led by Pathfinder International and including JSI, EnCompass, Malaria Consortium, Abt Associates, and the Ethiopian Midwives Association, in collaboration with government partners at all levels.
