SUMMARY

In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia the Asia Resilient Cities (ARC) Project partners with the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar and residents to build urban resilience in response to the critical challenges of climate change. The USAID-funded project promotes sustainable urban growth; supports resilient, low-carbon urban infrastructure; and integrates climate change and environmental considerations into urban approaches. ARC also connects city residents, governments, and other stakeholders to create relationships that will continue past the end of this project.

ARC in Ulaanbaatar is implemented by The Asia Foundation. Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and is home to nearly half of the country’s population. The city is Mongolia’s political, economic, and cultural hub, located in a north-central valley on the Tuul River. Ger areas – urban settlements where traditional housing (gers) are prevalent and infrastructure is often limited – are rapidly expanding as more Mongolians move from the countryside. Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world and residents rely mainly on coal for heat, causing air pollution. Other causes and consequences of air pollution in the city relate to climate change, equity, migration, and access to public services.

ARC is a five-year cooperative agreement funded by USAID under Agreement No. 7200AA22CA00011, beginning September 23, 2022. ARC is implemented by JSI with partners BRAC, DevTech Systems, Inc., ICF, John Snow India Private Limited, and The Asia Foundation. This product is made possible by the generous support of the American people through USAID. The contents are the responsibility of ARC and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the U.S. Government.
