Taking Action to Help Shape Climate-Resilient Futures

At COP 28, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, governments and organizations are discussing and developing actions to align efforts to address the climate crisis. The conference spotlights climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives, including in education and health.
JSI has a long history of work in environmental health. World Education, a division of JSI, works to transform education to include green life skills that support people in building their climate resilience. Young people are calling for an education that preserves and advances sustainable livelihoods and community health resilience, with greater emphasis on climate justice and their own leadership roles. We are working with young people on youth-led research activities to make education more responsive to the climate crisis.
We also support the integration of information systems within a One Health context to reduce the risk of the spillover of zoonotic diseases from animals to people, advance climate resilience within urban settings, and expand vital efforts towards “greening supply chains” to reduce the sizable carbon footprint of health systems.
JSI and its affiliates are committed to integrating climate and environment considerations into all projects and challenging the systemic issues that simultaneously perpetuate inequity, injustice, and environmental disasters.
We are a signatory to InterAction’s NGO Climate Compact, a multi-faceted agreement that holds us accountable as we engage in advocacy and education efforts, address the multi-dimensional drivers of climate and environment change, examine and change our internal operations, and learn from others. The Partnership for Supply Chain Management, a JSI affiliate, is a member of the WHO-led Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate Change and Health, which supports countries’ commitments to climate resilience and health sector decarbonization, and the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. JSI’s joined UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership to advance our shared goal of ensuring learners gain knowledge, competencies and attitudes to promote inclusive, sustainable development and tackle the climate crisis.
JSI recognizes that achieving and sustaining improved education and health requires an unwavering commitment to supporting community-led strategies for mitigation, adaptation, and resilience that prevent and minimize the impact of disastrous events and dangerous new “normals.” It is vital to prepare our systems, institutions, and community leaders and residents by prioritizing the identification and reduction of risks, particularly for the people most disproportionately affected, as we work to advance racial equity and improve education, health, and wellbeing.
We strive to build lasting relationships to produce better health outcomes for all.
