TIFA Accelerator Series | Transforming Pediatric TB Diagnosis in Uganda

In Uganda, an estimated 36% of children with tuberculosis (TB) were undiagnosed and unreported in 2021, risking severe complications and death. Challenges include difficulties obtaining sputum for testing and varying skill levels among health workers. To address this, the Uganda National Tuberculosis Leprosy Control Program (NTLP) and the WHO-Supranational Reference Laboratory/National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (SRL/NTRL) received funding from Tuberculosis Implementation Framework Agreement (TIFA) in 2023 to improve pediatric TB case finding using a simple one-step (SOS) stool-based TB processing method. SRL-Uganda developed 13 training modules and conducted Training of Trainers workshops for personnel from all national and regional referral hospitals. SRL-Uganda provided onsite training to 34 health facilities and continues to monitor the number of children tested and the percentage of positive cases. This collaborative effort is accelerating the elimination of pediatric TB in Uganda.
