New Guidance for Monitoring and Measurement

High-quality and timely data are the foundation of a health information system. A new paper from the MEASURE Evaluation project defines and describes the use of data, especially for devising and acting on decisions related to health systems performance. Developed with support from USAID, the document:

• Describes activity areas to strengthen the demand for and use of data for decision-making.
• Summarizes indicators to measure the process and outputs of data use.
• Reviews tools to measure the dimensions of data use.

Tariq Azim, senior health information systems advisor at JSI, provided technical reviews and inputs. JSI has been a partner on MEASURE Evaluation since 1997. Our technical experts lead health information systems strengthening activities in Bangladesh, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, and Tanzania to improve health system performance by increasing demand for health information, improving tools and data collection practices, improving analysis, and most especially, improving use of information.
