The toll of preventable health care-associated infections (HAI) can be measured not only in lives lost but also in the billions of dollars expended for additional care resulting from these infections. HAIs can happen in any health care facility, including hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, end-stage renal disease facilities, and long-term care facilities.

JSI works with health departments to conduct on-site infection prevention preparedness assessments in selected health care facilities and assess the quality of HAI data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

We take a multidisciplinary approach, drawing upon staff expertise in clinical care, epidemiology, research, and regulatory policy. Other efforts include:

• Assisting state and federal health departments to develop research plans and policy.
• Training hospital staff on reporting of research-and-quality data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
• Conducting in-depth chart reviews of hospitals’ infection-related data.
