In Ethiopia, several factors limit people’s ability to pursue good health: access to information and services, behavior, community support, and economic means. The USAID-funded Communication for Health project sought to improve healthy behaviors in four regions of Ethiopia through effective social and behavior change communications.
The project focused on several health areas: reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health; malaria; tuberculosis; water, sanitation, and hygiene; prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV; and nutrition. It worked across four regions: Amhara; Oromia; Tigray; and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region.
JSI’s work for the project built capacity at national, regional, and sub-regional levels to design, implement, and evaluate effective social and behavior change communication programs. As a result, regional health bureaus and zonal health departments are better equipped to conduct health awareness activities, and communities have access to more information about healthy behaviors and the health services available to them. JSI also provided support and resources to local implementing partners, which are now better able to provide quality SBCC materials and activities that positively impact the health outcomes of their communities.
JSI was a subcontractor to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs. JSI’s work on the project concluded in December 2019.
