SUMMARY

JSI recognizes that high quality education, skills, and organizational capacity are paramount to building strong health systems. Yet many providers lack the skills to implement effective health programs, respond to health emergencies, and put learning into practice. Strengthening institutional capacity, while a daunting challenge in any setting, is further complicated in fragile states still recovering from civil war and the recent Ebola epidemic (Liberia, Sierra Leone) or lacking political stability (DRC).

The Resilient and Responsive Health Organizations (RRHO) project is building organizational capacity, and also creating a transnational learning collaborative that supports knowledge exchange to effectively respond to health sector challenges.

Implemented by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., the RRHO project, funded by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is mandated to build the capacity of diverse institutions (known as “impact partners”) that include schools of medicine, schools of midwifery and nursing, professional associations, and government ministries that contribute to improving the quality of health professional education and meet the health work force needs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Jointly with the impact partners, JSI/RRHO is developing capacity development plans that help to sustain their work well into the future, forge foundational relationships within their countries and across the continent, build a sustainable community of practice, and create an environment for continuous learning, sharing, and peer-to-peer exchange. This is being achieved through the project’s two components, organizational capacity development and an interactive learning collaborative.
