Join JSI at the “The Power of PEFPAR” Webinar
December 5th, 2021 | event
Join JSI, USAID, and PATH on December 6 for a webinar on “The Power of PEPFAR,” highlighting how the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) platform can be used to address COVID-19 and future pandemics.
As JSI founder Joel Lamstein notes in a recent article, PEPFAR has made unparalleled investments in health systems around the world since its inception in 2003. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, revealed substantial gaps in global health infrastructure, particularly in populations struggling with other infectious diseases, including HIV. In the early days of the pandemic, there was an 11% decline in people reached with HIV prevention services, and a 22% drop in testing.
With funding from the U.S. government, PEPFAR responded immediately to the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020 by adapting its programming in real-time to protect HIV gains and respond to the pandemic. Its HIV response platform has been used to support service delivery of diagnostics, clinical care services, and vaccines, with a focus on vulnerable and underserved populations. Through its strong and integrated HIV infrastructure, PEPFAR has led COVID-19 vaccination efforts while maintaining the performance of its HIV programming.
Mukachilima Chikuba, JSI’s Zambia country director and chief of party of the Zambia DISCOVER-Health Project, will represent JSI among a panel of experts moderated by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
