Women’s health is more than just maternal and child health, it has a larger impact on development than extends far beyond their reproductive role. A new article in the BMJ, Investing in the health of girls and women: a best buy for sustainable development, co-authored by JSI board member David Bloom, dives into why women’s health should receive greater investment in low, middle, and high-income countries.
Not only do healthy women and girls tend to be more productive, but they also have improved educational investments and contribute to the overall wellbeing of their communities. However, health systems often fail women due to biases in medicine and health care delivery. The authors summarize the latest evidence on the impact of investing in women’s and girl’s health, and how the benefits extend to the overarching goals of gender equity, human development, universal health coverage, political stability, and environmental sustainability.
