We are pleased to announce a new project to advance contraceptive access and choice for women and girls. This project will seek to close key programming and research gaps in subcutaneous DMPA (DMPA-SC) to guide future investments in the product, other new contraceptive methods, and self-care more widely.

Funders and implementers have supported numerous countries in their introduction and scale up of DMPA-SC alongside other methods delivered through informed choice programming, as part of each country’s total market plan. However, several countries that scaled up DMPA-SC did so without significant support. Understanding the status of scale-up, technical assistance needs, and lessons from these geographies can inform future priorities for funder portfolios.

The multi-funder supported DMPA-SC programs, including the DMPA-SC Access Collaborative and programs implemented by CHAI and Jhpiego, have highlighted several programmatic research questions. This project will provide resources to work collaboratively and delve into these questions with primary and secondary research.

Finally, the project will develop recommendations to fully commercialize DMPA-SC in public and private sectors.

The project will work with partners to develop insights and support the development of tools to accelerate scale up. This work will guide future investments in the DMPA-SC, other new contraceptive methods, and self-care more widely in these and other countries.

This activity builds on JSI’s more than 40 years of family planning, new product introduction, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning expertise.
