In Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic the Asia Resilient Cities (ARC) Project partners with the Bishkek Mayor’s Office and residents to mitigate cross-cutting urban development challenges. The USAID-funded project promotes sustainable urban growth; supports resilient, low-carbon urban infrastructure; and integrates climate change and environmental considerations into urban approaches. ARC also connects city residents, governments, and other stakeholders to create relationships that will continue past the end of this project.
Bishkek is the capital and largest city in the mostly rural Kyrgyz Republic. It is home to approximately 1.1 million residents, comprising 66 percent of the country’s urban population. The city of Bishkek is situated in the Chüy Valley near the Chu River, and at the foot of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountain range. This unique geography makes it Central Asia’s greenest city, with a rich biodiversity in its tree-lined streets and many parks. Air pollution is a major concern in Bishkek, as the city relies on coal for heating during the winter.
