END Neglected Tropical Diseases in Africa was a five-year project contributing to USAID's goal of reducing the global prevalence of NTDs through grants to support rapid expansion of integrated, country-led NTD control programs employing preventive chemotherapy (PCT) and other program components. Under END in Africa, JSI was responsible for building capacity in supply chain management, including quantification of medicines used for preventive chemotherapy (PCT).
More than a billion people, most of them in developing countries, suffer from one or more neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that cause illness, disability, and loss of productivity. Poor and rural populations without access to safe water, sanitation, and essential drugs bear much of the burden, as do women. Although the seven NTDs (lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, three soil-transmitted helminths, and trachoma) can be prevented and/or cured with highly effective drugs, these seven diseases continue to present a major global public health challenge.
END in Africa was one of three USAID cooperative agreements providing grants to address the challenges faced by Ministries of Health and their NGO partners implementing NTD programs. The project was implemented by FHI and three core partners – JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., Deloitte Consulting LLP, and Liverpool Associates in Tropical Health (LATH).
