India introduced the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) under the Universal Immunization Program (UIP) in a phased manner in 2017, culminating in a nationwide expansion by October 2021.
JSI was nominated as the lead partner agency by the Government of India for providing techno-managerial support for PCV expansion across 31 states and union territories. JSI works on building on the approach of a strong liaison with national and state governments and partners, suitably customized and calibrated to the needs of the states. Few of the notable activities towards successful implementation of PCV include the development of digital preparedness assessments, state-wise phasing plans based on vaccine availability, capacity building of frontline healthcare workers through hybrid training models, and post-introduction supportive supervision and monitoring. The efforts led to the nationwide expansion of PCV ahead of the March 2022 target, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
By March 2024, 193 million doses of PCV have been administered, achieving an 88.1% coverage rate within three years. Moving forward, JSI will continue to support the national and state governments with ongoing monitoring, training, and strategic initiatives to ensure universal access to the PCV vaccine, ensuring no child is left behind.
