The USAID NextGen Ugavi Bora, Afya Bora (Better Supply, Better Health) Activity in Tanzania is a ten-year initiative designed to strengthen the country's public health supply chain and pharmaceutical services. Operating under the NextGen Comprehensive Technical Assistance IDIQ mechanism, this Activity aims to ensure sustainable access to and appropriate use of safe, effective, quality-assured, and affordable health commodities. Building on JSI’s previous work through the USAID Global Health Supply Chain – Technical Assistance program, the Activity will further strengthen efforts to address supply chain challenges and improve health outcomes in Tanzania.
The overarching goal of USAID Ugavi Bora, Afya Bora is to establish a resilient and efficient health supply chain and pharmaceutical management system. This goal is supported by four key objectives:
Objective 1: The public health supply chain and pharmaceutical workforce is skilled, motivated, and equipped with the tools necessary to conduct SC&PM activities effectively.
Objective 2: Public health supply chain and pharmaceutical management systems are characterized by defined and streamlined processes and procedures that encourage adaptability to respond to changing demand and supply requirements, resulting in availability and affordability of quality products at the last mile.
Objective 3: Supply chain and pharmaceutical management governance structures foster stakeholder engagement, effectively manage resources, and utilize public and private partnerships where needed, to improve performance.
Objective 4: Data are visible throughout the relevant systems, and shared with relevant stakeholders, who use technology and analytic capabilities to continually improve performance.
To achieve these objectives, the Activity will employ a comprehensive technical approach tailored to address existing challenges and deliver measurable results, in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and key strategic partners. By focusing on workforce development, process optimization, governance enhancement, and data-driven decision-making, USAID Ugavi Bora, Afya Bora aims to create a sustainable and effective supply chain and pharmaceutical system that meets Tanzania’s health needs.
